The correct YouTube banner size is 2560 x 1440 pixels. The part most creators miss is the safe zone — only the center 1546 x 423 pixels shows on every device. Design outside that strip and your channel name or logo disappears on mobile. Here are the exact specs and how to upload it.

Step 1: Set Your Canvas to 2560 x 1440 Pixels

This is YouTube’s required channel art size, per its official channel customization specifications .

Open your design tool and create a new canvas at 2560 pixels wide by 1440 pixels tall. In Canva, use “Custom size” and enter those dimensions. In Photoshop or Figma, set width to 2560 and height to 1440.

File requirements from YouTube:

  • Format: JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP
  • Maximum file size: 6 MB
  • Minimum recommended size: 2560 x 1440 pixels (YouTube accepts down to 2048 x 1152, but smaller files look soft on TV displays)

Use PNG for designs with text and sharp logos — PNG compression handles hard edges better than JPG. Use JPG for photo-heavy backgrounds where keeping the file under 6 MB is a concern.

Do not start at a smaller canvas and scale up before export. Starting at 1280 x 720 and doubling the dimensions does not add visual information — the result is a soft or pixelated banner even if the pixel count is technically correct.

Step 2: Keep Everything Important Inside the Safe Zone

YouTube crops your banner differently depending on the viewer’s device. The full 2560 x 1440 canvas only shows on TVs. On every other device, YouTube slices the sides:

DeviceVisible area
TV2560 x 1440 pixels (full canvas)
Desktop2560 x 423 pixels (top portion, sides shown as background)
Tablet1855 x 423 pixels
Mobile1546 x 423 pixels

The safe zone is 1546 x 423 pixels, centered on your canvas. This is the only region guaranteed to appear on every device.

What this means in practice: if your channel name, logo, or any key text falls outside that center strip, mobile viewers will not see it. YouTube provides an official channel art template with safe zone guides — use it to verify your layout before export.

Put your channel name and primary visual inside the 1546 x 423 safe zone. Use the outer canvas areas for background imagery or decorative elements that can be cropped without losing meaning.

Step 3: Upload Your Banner in YouTube Studio

Once your banner file is ready:

  1. Go to YouTube Studio .
  2. Click Customization in the left sidebar.
  3. Select the Branding tab.
  4. Under Banner image, click Upload.
  5. Select your file — must be under 6 MB.
  6. Use the crop preview tool to confirm key elements appear correctly on each device layout.
  7. Click Done, then Publish in the upper right.

After publishing, check your channel page on both desktop and a phone. Mobile is the one most creators skip — open your channel on a phone and confirm your channel name is visible in the cropped banner view.

If your PNG is over 6 MB, reduce the canvas resolution or export at a lower quality setting. At 2560 x 1440, PNG files typically land between 1-5 MB depending on design complexity; JPG files typically land well under 2 MB at 80-90% quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the YouTube banner safe zone?

The safe zone is the 1546 x 423 pixel area in the center of your 2560 x 1440 canvas that shows on every device, including mobile. YouTube crops your channel art differently depending on whether viewers are on TV, desktop, tablet, or mobile. Only the safe zone is never cut off. Keep your channel name, logo, and any key text inside this region — the outer portions of the canvas serve as background fill that gets cropped on smaller screens. YouTube’s official channel art template includes safe zone markers to help you design accurately.

What file size limit does YouTube have for channel art?

Per YouTube’s channel customization documentation , the maximum file size for banner images is 6 MB. YouTube accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, and BMP formats. PNG is the better choice for designs with text and logos because it handles sharp edges without compression artifacts. JPG is better for photo-based designs where file size is a concern. If your PNG exceeds 6 MB, export at a slightly lower quality or reduce the canvas resolution before uploading.

Can I change my YouTube banner after uploading?

Yes. You can replace your YouTube channel art at any time through Customization > Branding in YouTube Studio. Changing the banner does not affect your subscriber count, view history, or any channel analytics. There is no cooldown period, so you can test different designs and update as often as needed.
